- DESCRIPTION:
- Inspired by the Saab Viggen, the VariViggen was Burt Rutan's
- first homebuilt plane offered to the public in plan form. It is
- constructed primarily of wood, with aluminum outer wing panels.
- A later development, called the VariViggen SP has a different outer
- wing configuration with longer span, and hence a better
- rate-of-climb due to the higher aspect ratio. The SP wing was
- constructed from composites, as are the majority of Rutan's later
- designs. In 1974, the VariViggen won the EAA's "Outstanding
- New Design" award at the Oshkosh fly-in.
- The prototype, N27VV, was powered with a 150 hp engine,
- although builders could use either 150 or 180 hp engines. The
- prototype was flown in the movie "Death Race 2000" starring
- David Carradine. A radio-controlled model VariViggen was used
- for the crash sequence in the movie. The VariViggen was repainted
- usig the Air Force Thunderbird's paint scheme, and the nickname
- "Thunder Chicken" was painted on the side of the plane. The
- prototype was donated to the EAA Museum, along with the prototype
- VariEze, N7EZ.
-
-
- FLYING:
- Start the engine using the FS4 command 'M5', and then
- increase the throttle as in a normal plane. At about 80 knots,
- pull back on the stick. You can use partial flaps for an
- earlier liftoff.
- The VariViggen is an easy flying plane. I've minimized
- departure-stall behavior in using a SIM based on the Experimental
- Prop Plane in FS4/ASD. You can fly at full back stick at any
- power setting. My model does not fully model the real planes
- stall-proof behavior, as it is possible to do accelerated stalls
- or stall in a turn.
-
-
- LANDING:
- No special requirements here. You can easily make a
- powered landing at partial or zero throttle setting. If
- using flaps, then you will need to carry some power all
- the way through to the landing flare. The VariViggen can
- be flown with full aft stick and climb controlled by
- power setting, just as in the real plane.
- I like to fly with a ThrustMaster FCS or FCS Pro
- joystick, and set the sensitivity to maximum
- (4-E-B-8-ESC-ESC) for most planes.
-
- CRUISE:
- My methodology for checking top speed is to use the
- autopilot, set an altitude, usually 10,000 feet, and then
- let the plane settle in level flight. The model VariViggen
- attained 150 knots using 160 hp in the SIM model.
-
-
- NOTES:
- The dimensions of the plane were estimated from drawings
- and information in "The Complete Guide to RUTAN AIRCRAFT",
- by Don and Julia Downie. Additional information from
- "CANARD: A Revolution in Flight", by Andy Lennon.
-
- Like others, I experienced some difficulty in the
- bleed-through of parts, and disappearance of panel lines at
- some angles. I think this is a minor distraction compared to
- the fun of flying these unique planes in FS4.
- This model is not mult-player compatible (MP=133%), but if
- you wish, you can delete the panel lines, canopy bows, cowling ports,
- and spinner to make a MP compatible plane with AAF.

- DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
-
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
- before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
- using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
- differ on details -- some request registration while others
- require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
- registration of RUSSAIR, you get the most recent revision of
- the airplane files for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0b,
- and source code for use with Mallard's Aircraft and Adventure Factory.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
- and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
- exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
- programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
- of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
- and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
- distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
- and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written
- permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
- Shareware.
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
- should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
- whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
- fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
- And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
- has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
- product, you don't pay for it.
-
- DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
-
- Users of RUSSAIR planes must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
- "RUSSAIR planes are supplied as is. The author disclaims all
- warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
- the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
- The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or conse-
- quential, which may result from the use of RUSSAIR planes."
-
- RUSSAIR is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
- to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
- friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
- another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
- provide personal computer users with quality software without
- high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
- continue to develop new products. If you find these program files
- useful and find that you are using RUSSAIR planes and continue to use
- RUSSAIR after a reasonable trial period, you must make a reg-
- istration payment of to Russell Mueller for each RUSSAIR set.
- The registration fee will license one copy of the collection for use
- on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just
- like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
- number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
- location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
- being used at one location while it's being used at another.
- Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
- same time.
-
-
- Anyone distributing RUSSAIR planes for any kind of remuneration must
- first contact Russell Mueller at the address below for authorization
- and licensing agreement.
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of RUSSAIR along to your
- friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
- copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users
- will receive a copy of the latest version of the RUSSAIR
- system, software support via mail for 3 months
- from date of registration, and the source code for use with
- Mallard's Aircraft and Adventure Factory for modifying the
- planes for your own personal use. The planes may not be used
- in a commercial, shareware, or other retail program without
- a license from the author.

- ***ASP Ombudsman Policy********************************************
- "This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware
- Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle
- works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with
- an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help.
- The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP
- member, but does not provide technical support for members' products.
- Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442
- or send a Compuserve message via Compuserve Mail to ASP Ombudsman
- 70007,3536.
